Coalfields Community Grants Level 2 Case Study

Level 2 Grants Programme Case Studies

Wheels to Work Nottinghamshire - Case Study

Wheels 2 WorkThe Wheels to Work Nottinghamshire project has been running since 2002, and now with continued support from our funders The Coalfields Regeneration Trust, is able to assist a further 70 people into employment by overcoming their transport barrier!

The scheme provides Mopeds on loan for 6 months, with all equipment, training and insurance where other transport is not available. For shorter journeys, bicycles and equipment can be provided, and where public transport is available but affordability is the problem, tickets for the first few weeks can be provided.

Helping people to overcome their transport barriers in this way means that they can access new jobs, and remove the problem of how they can get to work. This is a particular problem in rural and disadvantaged areas, and typical of the ex-coalfields communities in Nottinghamshire. With help from Wheels to Work, residents are starting new jobs, getting themselves back into work and building new careers!

To date, almost 700 people have benefited from the project in this way, and have been able to get back into work.

Wheels to Work Derbyshire - Case Study

Jonathan Over from Shirebrook

Wheels 2 Work DerbysJonathan was registered with a recruitment agency and had been offered warehouse work in a number of factories, but transport was often a barrier, and he had to turn down some opportunities because he couldn’t get there for the shift patterns required.

Jonathan was recently offered a position at a plastics factory at an industrial park at Somercotes.  He was keen to take this job, and so contacted Wheels to Work Derbyshire to see if moped loan was available to him.  The Project Manager met with Jonathan at the Family Employment Initiative in Shirebrook to complete all the paperwork.  A moped was delivered to Jonathan ready for him to start the job a couple of days later.

Wheels to Work Derbyshire now works with credit unions, and Jonathan signed up to become a member of 2 Shires Credit Union, and will save while he is with Wheels to Work.  At the end of the 6 month moped loan, Jonathan will be eligible to borrow money from the credit union to buy his own moped.  The partnership with credit unions and Wheels to Work is a positive step towards helping clients afford sustainable transport once the loan period has ended.
