Facts and Figures

With a population approaching seven million, the North West is a socially diverse region, representing just under 12% of the UK population. Some 8% of the population in the North West live in the designated coalfield communities of St Helens, Wigan and West Cumbria. The Lancashire coalfield (St Helens and Wigan) and the Cumbrian coalfield have very different physical and geographical characteristics but share the legacy of a greater level of disadvantage, resulting from significant employment loss over a long period of time, primarily as a result of the decline of traditional industries. Less than one hundred years ago the coal industry employed in the region of 100,000 people, however by 1992 all collieries in West Cumbria and Lancashire had closed.

Since the Trust was launched in 1999 we have awarded grants totalling more than £12 million to over 250 North West groups.

The grants awarded have covered the full breadth of regeneration themes and successful groups and organisations obtaining funding have been as diverse as the communities we serve.
