


Facts and Figures
A large part of the Welsh economy was founded on coal. In its heyday the Welsh coal industry employed a quarter of a million men, but the decline has been almost continuous since the 1920’s. Now only a number of small mines and open cast sites still remain in production.
Around 750,000 people in total live in the former coalfield communities of North and South Wales. This represents over a quarter of the entire population of Wales
Since the Trust was launched in 1999 we have awarded grants totalling over £11 million to nearly 500 groups in Wales.
