As an employer we recognise that:

People who are long term unemployed may have experienced discrimination in recruitment and selection procedures. This may discourage them from seeking work.

Whilst some people will acknowledge their experience of being unable to find work in a frank and open way, others may have lost their self-esteem and feel the stigma of unemployment will jeopardise their chances of getting a job.
Given appropriate support, the vast majority of people who have been out of the labour market for a variety of reasons can continue to work successfully.

As an employer we aim to:

Show a positive and enabling attitude to employees and job applicants who have been long term unemployed. This will include positive statements in local recruitment literature.
Ensure that all staff involved in recruitment and selection are briefed on tackling worklessness and given appropriate interview skills
Not make assumptions that a person who has been long term unemployed is less capable than any other potential employee.
Provide non-judgemental and proactive support to individuals who have been unable to secure employment over a period of time.
Ensure all line managers and staff involved in procurement have information on procedures relating to the recruitment of staff through the Coalfields Regeneration Trust.
