MIDNIGHT LEAGUES

Midnight Leagues encourage some of the most at risk young people in coalfield areas to engage in a more positive activity in the evenings through organised football leagues at community facilities.

Although called Midnight Leagues, the football sessions actually take place at various times in the evenings. The main aim is to offer young people a positive and healthy option in their free time, where they can enjoy themselves in a safe and enjoyable environment. This has in turn resulted in a noticeable reduction in anti social behaviour in communities where the Midnight Leagues are being delivered.

The Midnight Leagues programme offers structured regular competitive games with the opportunity to progress onto regional and national finals each year.

The project can also provide sign-post opportunities into local clubs and voluntary work with GAME ON with the potential to lead onto coaching and other qualifications.

Perhaps the strongest proof of the Midnight Leagues’ success has been the comments from the young people who have been involved. All have been extremely positive, saying that they would like the leagues to continue and many pointing out that, through the Leagues, not only have football skills improved but new friendships have been formed.

Development of Midnight Leagues

Each Midnight League is coordinated and delivered by key local partners such as Sports Development Units, Football in the Community Schemes or Youth Service teams. These partners work with referral groups such as Community Groups, the Police and Youth Offending Teams to recruit players who fit in with meeting the project aims and objectives.

GAME ON Support

GAME ON provides its partners with the support and resources to develop the Midnight Leagues with the aim of building sustainable projects through building the Midnight Leagues into partners’ annual development plans.
