Disability Awareness Day
On the day the Paralympics were handed over from Beijing to London, Game On and Sports Legacy worked with Stone Hill Special School to provide a disability awareness day. The purpose of the day was to give students the chance to enjoy everyday sport from a Paralympics point of view. Activities included; blind football, javelin and basketball (provided by the school).
For the blind football, the pupils paired up with one player wearing an eye mask and the other as a guide; the children played with a ball with a bell in it to complete the experience.
Thomas Smith a year 10 pupil at Stone Hill said, “I thought blind football was hard to do because I didn’t know where to go in case I fell over”.
For the javelin, the pupils tried throwing the javelin from a seated position as wheel chair athletes would do, with their eyes closed.
Thomas also said “with me eyes closed it was a bit hard to do and I could lose my balance.’
