Banana Enterprise Network, the Worsley based charity that equips local residents with the skills needed to find employment or to start their own business, has received £10,000 in funding thanks to the Coalfields Community Investment Programme.

The funds will be used to extend the services offered by Banana Enterprise to include tailored employability and enterprise programmes. As a result, support will now be in place for unemployed residents who are either NEETs; not registered with a job centre or haven’t successfully progressed into work after completing statutory programmes.

With the objective to reduce poverty in the local area and remove barriers to self-employment by delivering training to disadvantaged people, the charity provides the knowledge, skills and support needed for local residents to start their own business.

Jayne Allman, CEO for Banana Enterprise Network, comments: “This funding gives us the resources needed to offer training and inspiration to local residents. Many local people in Worsley have the skills and knowledge needed to start their business, however one of the biggest barriers they face is building up the confidence to take the next step.”

“Through our range of programmes and mentoring we are there to support people from a range of backgrounds to reach their potential and put their ideas into practice.”

Andy Lock, Head of Operations for the Coalfields Regeneration Trust (England), comments: “Unemployment is a persistent challenge in former mining towns and villages and by working together with our partners and charities across these communities we can tackle the issue head-on.”

“Working with the Banana Enterprise Network we are able to ensure that more coalfield residents have the support and training needed to bring their business ideas to life and start their own company or social enterprise, which will in turn reduces unemployment in these areas.”

“The impact is not only evident from the changes in the individuals involved in the programme, but from their wider networks, family and friends.”
