This summer marks a very special milestone for Horden, as the community comes together to celebrate 125 years since the village was founded in 1900. Built on coal and community, Horden has a proud mining heritage that has shaped its people, its identity, and its resilience. From the days of the colliery to the present, generations of families have called Horden home, carrying forward a legacy of hard work and solidarity.
To mark this anniversary, the village will host two weeks of celebrations from 18th August to 30th August, filled with activities, memories, and community spirit. The highlight will take place on Seventh Street outside the CRT Horden Hub House, where a brand-new mural will be unveiled before a community street party brings neighbours together for refreshments, entertainment, old-fashioned games, and the chance to share stories of Horden’s past.
To leave a lasting reminder of this anniversary, CRT has worked with the local community to create a striking new mural on the outside of the CRT Horden Hub House. Designed and completed by Durham Spray Paints, the mural was made possible thanks to input from local people of all ages, who came together to celebrate the village’s history through art.
One of the most moving features of the mural is the silhouette of a real miner who once worked down Horden pit, a powerful reminder of the lives, families, and heritage that built this community. The mural will be officially unveiled on the day of the street party — a lasting tribute to Horden’s identity and a symbol of pride for generations to come.
The celebrations are being supported by a wide range of organisations and partners, all coming together to make the anniversary special:
Neighbourhood Wardens
Durham Police
Move Durham
Horden Together
Health Squad Team
DASH

DCC
We also want to give special thanks to the staff and volunteers at the CRT Horden Hub House, whose dedication and hard work continue to make the Hub a welcoming space at the heart of the community.
Horden’s 125th anniversary is not just about remembering the past, but also about celebrating the community that exists today and looking ahead to the future. The anniversary celebrations show how partnership working can make a real difference in the village. By bringing together local people, organisations and services, we are helping Horden build on its strengths and move towards new opportunities.
This partnership approach underpins the work taking place in Horden every day. It is about giving residents the support and resources they need to reach their full potential.
