The Coalfields Regeneration Trust (CRT) would like to pay tribute to John Prescott following the sad news of his passing. Without his passion and commitment for creating prosperity in those parts of the UK experiencing economic decline, the CRT would not be here today.
As Deputy Prime Minister he established the Coalfields Taskforce in 1997 with the aim of developing a practical programme of action to help communities affected by the pit closures. Following the recommendations made by this taskforce, John made the decision that an independent charity should be established to champion the coalfields and ensure government funding and resources reached the communities in most need. The CRT was established in 1999 to fulfil this role.
John was a fantastic supporter of the CRT and we hope the difference we have made over the last 25 years is a legacy John was proud of. He will be greatly missed by all those at the CRT and we would like to pass on our most sincere condolences to his family and friends.
